Dr. Chulhong Kim studied for his Ph.D. degree and postdoctoral training at Washington University in St. Louis, St. Louis, Missouri under the supervision of Dr. Lihong V. Wang, Gene K. Beare Distinguished Professor (main advisor; currently, Bren Professor of Medical Engineering and Electrical Engineering at California Institute of Technology), Dr. Younan Xia, and Dr. Samuel Achilefu. He currently holds Namgo Chairprofessorship, Young Distinguished Professorship and Mueunjae Chair Professorship of School of Convergence Science and Technology (Head) Electrical Engineering, Convergence IT Engineering (Department Chair), Mechanical Engineering, and Medical Science and Engineering (Program Chair) at Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH) in Republic of Korea. He is also the Director of Medical Device Innovation Center at POSTEH supported by Ministry of Education and the Vice-Director of POSTECH-Catholic BioMedical Engineering. Before he joined the department, he was an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University at Buffalo, the State University of New York from Aug 2010 to Jan 2013. He was a Visiting Associate Professor and Scholar of Radiology at Stanford University and Mayo Clinic. He was the recipients of the 2022 Korean Presidential Award endorsed from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the 2022 Korean Minister’s Awards (Ministry of Science and ICT and Ministry of Health and Welfare), the Science and Technology Award of the Month for December 2021 by the Korean Minister of Science and ICT, the 2021 LINA+50 Creative Innovation Award (1st Place), the 2020-2021 IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) Distinguished Lecturer, the 2017 IEEE EMBS Academic Early Career Achievement Award, the 2017 Korean Academy of Science and Technology Young Scientist Award (The Korean Presidential and Highest Award for Engineers under 40), the 2016 Nightingale Award from The International Federation for Medical and Biological Engineering (IFMBE), and the 2017 Korean Society of Medical & Biological Engineering Young Investigator Award “Contributions to multi-scale photoacoustic imaging from super-resolution atomic force photoactivated microscopy for research to systems for clinical applications.” He has published 253 peer-reviewed journal articles (Nature and Science Portfolio, Chemical Reviews, PNAS, IEEE T. Transactions, etc) and 88 conference proceedings articles. His team also filed and/or registered 34 domestic/international patents. His Google Scholar h-index and citations have reached 77 and over 19,400, respectively. His group’s works have been selected for the 1st positions of the USenhance and TDSC-ABUS Challenges in the 26th International Conference on Medical Image Computing and Computer Assisted Intervention (MICCAI 2023), the 2022/2025 Photoacoustics Elsevier/TomoWave Best Paper Award and the 2016-2017/2019-2021 Seno Medical Best Paper Award Finalists in Photons Plus Ultrasound Conference (the largest conference in the field) and the 2020 Hitachi High-tech Best Presentation Award in High-Speed Biomedical Imaging and Spectroscopy Conference, Photonics West, SPIE. Further, his group received the 2020 Microscopy Today Innovation Award and the 1st Industry-Academia Project Challenge Award (2020) from the Korean Minster of Industry, Trade, and Energy, entitled “Label-free Super-resolution Localization Photoacoustic Microscopy”. He also co-authored eight book chapters. He has currently served as a Section Editor of Photoacoustics Journal (premier journal in the field, IF: 9.656), an Associate Editor of IEEE T. Medical Imaging and IEEE T. Biomedical Engineering, a Leading Topical Editor of IEEE ACCESS, and an Editorial Board Member of various journals. He has served as an Organizing Committee for the conference on “Photons plus Ultrasound: Imaging and Sensing” and “High-Speed Biomedical Imaging and Spectroscopy: Toward Big Data Instrumentation and Management” held annually under auspices of SPIE (Photonics West), a Topic Chair for the 2022 Biophotonics Congress: Biomedical Optics (field of optical tomography and spectroscopy, General Chair for the 2024 Biophotonics Congress), a Topic Chair for the 2021/2023 SPIE/OSA European Conference on Biomedical Optics (ECBO, field of optoacoustics), and as a Theme Co-Chair for the 39th and 40th Annual International Conferences of the IEEE EMBS. He has served as a journal reviewer >250, including for Nature Photonics, Nature Communication, Nature Biomedical Engineering, Nature Machine Intelligence, Light Science & Applications, Nano Letters, ACS Nano, Scientific Reports, Optics Letters, Optics Express, Journal of Biomedical Optics, IEEE Transactions, and etc. He has delivered numerous keynote (including 2023 PAIR Distinguished Lectureship, BiOS Hot Topics, Photonics West, SPIE 2021 and Hot Topix, ECBO, SPIE/OSA 2021) and invited presentations (>160) in technical conferences and seminars in universities He is also elected as a member of Young Korean Academy of Science and Technology (Y-KAST) and a member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea (NAEK). He is a Fellow of the IEEE, SPIE, OPTICA, and AIMBE. His research interests are the development of novel biomedical imaging techniques including photoacoustic tomography, ultrasound-modulated optical tomography, fluorescence imaging, ultrasound imaging, and laser speckle contrast imaging. Particularly, his lab developed photoacoustic gastro-intestinal tract imaging using organic agents, photoacoustic cystography, clinical photoacoustic/ultrasound imaging scanner (clinically translated with Alpinion Medical), fast optical-resolution photoacoustic microscopy based on a 2-axis water-proof MEMS scanner (licensed to MGB; spin-off company, PAMsTECH and OPTICHO, virtual intraoperative photoacoustic surgical microscopy, raster scanning based photoacoustic whole body imaging of small animals, combined photoacoustic and optical coherence tomography using a single pulsed broadband laser source, acoustic-radiation force induced ultrasound-modulated optical tomography, etc.
